Flash! Ogun: Olabisi Onabanjo Varsity Students’ Protest Turns Bloody As Police Shoot Sporadically

rotesting oou students

Students of Olabisi Onabanjo converge at the main gate of the Ago-Iwoye campus for protest Monday morning

Reports just reaching News Bytes say two students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye in Ogun state were shot dead and several injured during a protest this morning. The students who were to begin their first semester exams today decided to have a rally to protest the directive of the University management to have any student yet to pay his/her school fees repeat the session.

Several students who spoke with News Bytes said the students through their union leaders had made several appeals to the management to spare those students that are yet to pay for the current academic session. With tuition fee ranging from N 100, 000 to N 250, 000 some students disclosed that they were not granted the request to pay up in 2 instalments but that the school extended the policy to those who owe for last session and even the current one.

One of the student union officers who spoke on phone confirmed that students staged a protest about four weeks ago when the school authorities refused to shift ground, but the Vice Chancellor reportedly addressed the protesters last month assuring them of resolving the situation.

However, the protesting students this morning were met by scores of mobile police officers who had been deployed from Abeokuta, the state capital and stationed at the main gate of the Ago-Iwoye campus of the University.

The police officers allegedly insisted that the Student Union bus should be removed from the main gate of the institution, a directive the students refused to obey. The security operatives then shot sporadically at the protesting students Monday morning killing two and injuring several others.

As at press time, several who escaped into nearby bushes are yet to return while some students who have returned took to the streets, burning cars and damaging properties.

Flash: NUC Unveil 41 Illegal Universities, Begin ICPC-Backed Operation “Shut Down Fake Varsities”

NUC Logo

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has identified 41 illegal universities operating in the country according to a statement signed by the commission’s Deputy Director (Legal), Mr Moses Awe.

Awe said the 41 illegal universities so far identified with fixed addresses have been published on NUC website.

The commission held a joint press conference at the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC) headquarters on the activities of the operators of the illegal “universities” across the country on Wednesday.

Prof. Shola Akinrinade, who represented the NUC executive secretary at the briefing equally denied insinuations that the commission had earlier granted temporary approval to the illegal institutions to operate. He said “the NUC does not grant temporary approval or licence to operate a university,” hence the publication of legal and illegal institutions on its website.

The ICPC also disclosed that it had commenced a nationwide joint operation with security operatives, beginning yesterday, to close down the premises of the 41 identified illegal “universities”, with the aim of seizing their properties, making arrest of operators and prosecuting the culprits.

ICPC stated that the culprits were allegedly either using a fake name or illegally operating a satellite campus in the name of an approved and known institution.

Prof. Olu Aina, who spoke on behalf of the ICPC chairman, Barrister Ekpo Nta, said the action is the first in the series of implementing the outcome of an ongoing ICPC/NUC University System Study and Review (USSR), for which ICPC sought and obtained a Federal High Court warrant to clamp down on the illegal institutions.

“The activities of these illegal operators have impacted negatively on the mental, psychological and economic wellbeing of many young Nigerians and their parents. The institutions constitute an embarrassment to the government and remain a monumental corruption of the education system.

“Therefore, an inter-agency task team comprising ICPC, the NUC, the police, the State Security Service and the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps will continue the exercise until all corrupt practices and impunity associated with the physical existence of such illegal institutions cease completely,” Aina said.

The ICPC also yesterday stormed Markurdi, Benue State capital, and arrested the registrar and proprietor of Lobi Institute of Management and Technology for allegedly awarding fake degree certificates. The anti-graft team gathered that the school was affiliated to a foreign university called Irish University Business School in London.

The NUC therefore advised school proprietors to be wary of lending or hiring out their facilities for these “after school hours and weekend” institutions to avoid having their premises sealed off or seized.

Flash: Finally, Brain Tumor Patient, Funke Badru For Surgery Tommorrow At UCH; Help Needed!

funke-before-and-after2

Funke Badru, a 21 year-old student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta Ogun State who has brain tumor has finally been given a space at the theatre of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan to undergo an operation to remove the growth on Wednesday.

News Bytes had called for a N2 million financial help for young and hopeful Funke in January this year, to which many well-meaning Nigerians responded. The Board of Management of MAPOLY gave a sum of N250, 000; the same amount was also donated by Mrs Toyin Saraki. Many within the News Bytes fold and beyond also gave their widows mite and a sum of N1.1 million was realised.

After this, Funke was  placed on medication for a pre-surgery procedure, which lasted till March and although she was to have had the surgery shortly after, the limitations in theatre space delayed this. Thankfully, Funke Badru has finally been slated to undergo the operation tomorrow Wednesday 8th May, 2013.

News Bytes have been in constant touch with her. We are hopeful that with the  YOUR support, Funke will make it through, healthy and back to school again.

An initial deposit of N1 million has been made on Monday, but an estimate of N800, 000 is still required for post-surgery expenses.

We therefore, on behalf of Funke Badru solicit for:

- Your prayers for a successful procedure tomorrow and  more importantly,

- Your financial support to raise the needed N800, 000

Although already on admission at the UCH, she can receive calls today, and won’t be able to tomorrow for obvious reasons, so please feel free to call her. Alternatively, send her texts to encourage her (Funke Badru’s Mobile – 08069388103).

Kindly forward your donations to Funke Badru’s Account (ACCOUNT DETAILS: ECO BANK, BADRU FUNKE: 2372113325)

Let’s make Funke Badru OUR success story!

Thank you.

Flash: Mixed Reactions Trail JAMB Results – 2,110 Results Withheld, 10 Out Of 1.7M Scored More Than 300

JAMB

Mixed reactions have followed the result of the Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examinations released by the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Friday.

Some parents and candidates in Bwari, Abuja, on Saturday complained of some challenges in accessing the JAMB portal to check results.

A worker with the Federal Government Girls’ College in Bwari, Grace Okoronkwo, said her son had not been able to access the results since they were released on Friday.

While others have been able to check their results, many students complained that their results were being withheld for various reasons displayed on the portal.

A candidate, David Okoronkwo, said he had been making efforts at accessing the portal for a long time but expressed optimism that with time he would access his results.

Chris Abah, a teacher, however advised that JAMB could take more time to scrutinise the results before releasing them to ensure that results were not withheld in error.

“I don’t know why the board should rush in releasing the results; ordinarily, one would have expected that the board would take time to address some challenges of some candidates before the results are released,’’ he said.

More than 1.7 million candidates wrote the examination on April 27, compared with more than 1. 4 million candidates who wrote the examination in 2012.

The examination board had announced that 10 candidates scored more than 300 marks in the examination as against three candidates who performed at the same level in 2012.

The judge took a decision to return the case file to the Chief Judge on noticing that the third accused person, Ikechukwu Louis Amadi, of the 11 accused persons, did not have a lawyer to defend him.

The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), I. Otorubio led his team for prosecution, other lawyers also announced their appearance in the matter but no counsel mentioned the accused’s name.

The judge, showing her reservation on the development announced she would rather return the case to the Chief Judge than try it because she would not take sides in the matter.

“It is safer to send the matter back to the Chief Judge for re-assignment than favour any party in this matter” she said.

Recall that four students of University of Port Harcourt were lynched on Friday October 5, 2012 namely Ugonna Obuzor, Lloyd Toku Mike, Tekenah Elkanah and Chiadika Biringa.

Flash! Horror As Boko Haram Lay Ambush, Slit WAEC Candidates’ Throats In Borno

Just as Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State is about putting behind it the recent killing of six secondary school teachers, including a principal, the local government was again plunged into mourning as many students were, on Saturday, murdered in cold blood by some gunmen suspected to be members of the Jama’atul Ahlis Sunnah Lid’ Awati, also known as Boko Haram.

It was learnt that the gunmen killed many students of Monguno Secondary School by slitting their throats, after laying an ambush for them as they returned home from centres where they wrote the West African Examination Council (WAEC) Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE).

Monguno is 135 kilometres North of Maiduguri, the state capital; and it is considered to be an epicentre of activities of the Islamist sect.

The gunmen, according to a villager, Mallam Aisami, ambushed the candidates on their way home on foot and bicycles. He added that the assailants tied the students’ hands together at their backs and slit their throats on the foot paths leading to the school premises in the afternoon.

He said when the dastardly deed had been done, the gunmen fled on three motorcycles towards Marte Local Government Area of Northern Borno before men of the Joint Task Force (JTF) rushed to the scene three hours after the students were already slain.

Spokesman of JTF, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa, and the Borno State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Musa Inuwa Kubo, confirmed the incident on Saturday.

They stated that it was a very “unfortunate and frightening incident,” decrying all that had been happening in the state.

Sagir and Kubo could, however, not ascertain the exact number of students allegedly killed by the suspects at Monguno.

Kubo, in a telephone interview, told journalists that; “I am calling on the people of Borno State to continue to pray and fast so that the incessant attacks and killings in the state cease peace and unity are restored.

“I pray that the trying and challenging times of insecurity of lives and property here in Borno will come to an end soon, by God’s willing and the full support of our leaders in the state.”

It was also gathered from JTF sources that; “until political leaders, along with traditional and religious leaders in Borno State, collectively condemn the activities of members of Boko Haram sect, there might be no peace, despite the deployment of troops and policemen to the state.”
