Flash: Plateau Lawmakers Jumped Fence To Escape From Protesting workers

The protest by members of labour unions in Plateau State over the non-payment of their seven-month salary took a new dimension on Tuesday as the workers invaded the state House of Assembly.

It was gathered that the workers, who began the protest on Monday, the same day the ultimatum given to them to resume work by Governor Jonah Jang expired, marched to the Assembly complex to register their grievances.

No sooner had the lawmakers sighted them than they abandoned their offices and fled in different directions.

Many of them were said to have scaled the wall to escape the wrath of the workers, who were not satisfied with the manner the lawmakers had handled the seven-month old strike.

Others, including the Speaker, Mr. John Clark, were said to have locked up themselves in their offices.

The workers also marched along some major roads in Jos, a development that resulted in heavy vehicular movements in the city.

Dressed in black attire, the protesters carried mock coffin and placards with inscriptions like, ‘pay us before we bury you’ and ‘Rest In Peace’.

One of the workers, Joshua Mathew, said they were not in the complex to attack the lawmakers, but to register their grivances.

He said, “We are not in the complex to attack the members of the assembly; we only came to submit oral petition because we had sent memos to the lawmakers several times for them to intervene in our plight, but we never got their response.”

He expressed dismay that the lawmakers abandoned their responsibilities to chase shadows.

Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mrs. Nanle Shingle, denied that the lawmakers jumped fences to escape.

She said the Assembly was not in session when the workers came.
